The government has announced plans to move 36 families from the Jittu squatter settlement in Raiwaqa, Suva, to modern housing as part of an initiative to tackle the issue of informal settlements within urban areas. Minister for Lands, Filimoni Vosarogo, shared these developments, highlighting the Ministry of Lands’ commitment to improving living conditions by replacing squatter settlements with modern housing facilities.
Mr. Vosarogo emphasized the goal of eliminating squatter settlements from urban centers, outlining the need for relocation strategies. He remarked that the Jittu Estate, which houses over a thousand families, is set for redevelopment into more suitable living accommodations.
To facilitate this project, collaboration with other ministries, particularly the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, as well as the Ministry of Finance, is crucial for ensuring the successful implementation of the plans. The aim is not only to relocate families but also to enhance their living conditions with improved infrastructure, including access to water, electricity, and waste management.
Acknowledging the challenges of this undertaking, Mr. Vosarogo advocated for open dialogue with the local residents of Jittu, stressing the importance of involving them in discussions about their future housing needs and the upgrade of their standard of living. He remains optimistic that with communication and collaboration, the path to improving these communities can be effectively managed.
This initiative reflects a significant step toward not only alleviating housing challenges but also improving the quality of life for families currently in informal settlements. It embodies a broader vision for sustainable urban development that could lead to a brighter future for many residents.
By focusing on upgrades and modern amenities, the government aims to foster a sense of community and provide a stable environment for families, ultimately promoting social and economic growth within the region.
