Reintegration Plans: A Path to Healing for Fijian Soldiers

Personnel dismissed after the 2000 military coup may be allowed to return to the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai revealed that the RFMF is considering this move as part of its reconciliation efforts.

He stated, “Part of the reconciliation process is to look into how we can reintegrate some of these affected soldiers back into the RFMF.” Major Kalouniwai highlighted that during the 2000 coup, some young soldiers found themselves caught up in difficult situations, resulting in sentences of six to eight years in prison.

The reconciliation discussions held in Vanua Levu centered around this issue, noting that many of the individuals affected are still relatively young or just over the age of 40. The RFMF is concentrating on how to reintegrate those under the age of 55 back into the force, describing this as a form of compensation for the individuals affected.

In addition to this plan, the RFMF is also committed to supporting the families and loved ones impacted by the events of that time. Major Kalouniwai emphasized the military’s dedication to seeing the reconciliation process through to completion.
