Reimagining Fiji’s Sugar Industry: A Glimpse into the Future

Ratu Josaia Niudamu recently spoke in parliament about the future of Fiji’s sugar industry while expressing his support for the 2024-2025 National Budget.

Mr. Niudamu pointed out that there is currently no funding allocated for the re-establishment of the FSC Penang Sugar Mill, but he remains hopeful about future developments.

“I have noted that no allocation has been made for the re-establishment of the FSC Penang Sugar Mill. But I know that it will come next year, as the Minister for Sugar has clearly spelled out in this august House in May this year,” he stated.

He referred to the Minister for Sugar’s assurance that the mill would be completed before the end of their term, highlighting a long-term commitment to revitalizing the sugar industry.

Mr. Niudamu also mentioned the potential purchase of a second-hand mill from China to be installed in Rakiraki, which would bring substantial economic benefits to the Ra area. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to support the agricultural sector and enhance economic stability in rural regions.

“Every dollar that has been allocated in this budget is shared with a clear intention that it should benefit all Fijians,” he said.

He urged the government to ensure the effective implementation of the budget so that Fijians can fully enjoy the announced assistance and incentives.
