The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is urging parents to ensure their children are registered at the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Registry prior to the start of the upcoming school year. During his visit to Bua on Wednesday and Thursday, he launched BDM services at several locations including the Post Fiji Shop in Kubulau, Wainunu, Lekutu, and Nabouwalu.
Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of parental responsibility, stating, “Every child born on this earth comes from a family, a mother and a father. Parents need to be responsible and get their child officially registered.” He noted that the ministry’s shift towards decentralizing these services aims to simplify the registration process for families.
Officials from the Ministry discovered that many children remain unregistered due to various factors including lack of awareness, ignorance, and in some cases, financial constraints. Mr. Turaga explained that having a complete record of registered children is essential for effective policy-making, allowing the government to plan more effectively based on demographic data.
With the newly established services now available in Bua, residents no longer need to travel to Savusavu or Labasa for BDM assistance, making the process more accessible for families in the community.
This initiative not only promotes the importance of birth registration but also supports informed decision-making at the governmental level, ultimately contributing to better planning and resource allocation for the community’s needs. By fostering a culture of registration, the Ministry hopes to empower families and help them take an active role in their children’s futures.
