Spanish authorities have achieved a significant victory in the battle against drug trafficking, having seized an astounding 13 metric tonnes of cocaine concealed within a shipment of bananas from Ecuador. This operation took place at the southern port of Algeciras on November 7, and is reported to be the second-largest drug seizure in Europe and among the largest globally.
Investigations by the Policía Nacional indicated that some of the cocaine packages were labeled with the name ‘Fiji.’ While the final destination of the drugs remains unclear, officials believe that the considerable amount of cocaine was likely intended for markets beyond Spain.
The successful interception of this shipment came after Ecuadorian authorities alerted Spanish police about a potentially problematic cargo. In the course of this operation, Spanish law enforcement arrested a woman linked to the company that was set to receive the shipment; however, two managers associated with the import business are still evading capture.
Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, expressed relief that the drugs were intercepted before reaching the streets, highlighting the effectiveness of international cooperation between police forces, such as Interpol’s involvement.
