A landmark payment of $105.08 per tonne, marking the highest amount ever in Fiji’s sugar industry, will be distributed to cane farmers this Diwali.
Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, highlighted that this exceptional support is not merely financial; it symbolizes a deep commitment to the dedication and resilience of all farmers. He noted that in acknowledgment of the difficulties faced by farmers, the Government, led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, has increased the payment from an initial rise of $2.57 to a total of $4 per tonne.
“This Diwali, we are fulfilling our promise to empower farmers, ease their burdens, and celebrate their daily contributions to Fiji,” Singh stated.
He emphasized that this historic payment reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to fostering a future in which the sugar industry prospers, and farmers’ livelihoods are strengthened and recognized.
