Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, including the pardons granted to George Speight and Shane Stevens, were executed through proper procedures without any outside influence.
Rabuka emphasized that these decisions should be seen as part of Fiji’s continual efforts for reconciliation and healing. He pointed out that the nation’s journey towards unity and progress requires reflection on the past and collective efforts to forge a brighter future.
He remarked, “Those of us who contributed to our nation’s instability must take responsibility for the delays in major development progress.”
The Prime Minister described the pardoned individuals as having served their time, suggesting that their release allows them to reintegrate into society and contribute positively.
“By embracing forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation, we can move forward together, creating a stronger and more united Fiji,” he added.
Rabuka is calling on all Fijians to support the Coalition Government’s initiatives for truth and reconciliation, which he believes are vital for the country’s growth and prosperity.
