Reconciliation in Action: Join the National Conversation!

Public participation is encouraged as consultations commenced this week aimed at forming a legal framework and establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, is spearheading the initiative, which follows several weeks of discussions. The first consultation earlier this week saw participation from representatives of faith-based organizations and Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC).

Kiran mentioned concerns regarding the perceived inaction and ongoing questions about the progress of the TRC. She noted that younger individuals, particularly those aged 35 to 40, generally exhibit less enthusiasm for the TRC and are more inclined to advocate for reallocating funds to health or other programs. In contrast, older individuals and families affected by past events express feelings of pain, trauma, and apprehension regarding the reconciliation process.

“The goal is to ensure a comprehensive approach that captures diverse perspectives, allowing the framework to address the needs of various sectors in society. Ultimately, we are focused on healing and closure,” she stated.

During the consultations, Raijeli Tuivaga, director of the Law Reform Commission, presented various elements of the draft. Leaders from different civil society organizations contributed their insights to be factored into the drafting of the Bill.

Kiran confirmed that the consultations would continue with various stakeholders, and additional discussions are planned across all divisions. Individuals interested in sharing their opinions can submit feedback via email at fijilawreformcommission@gmail.com.
