A former soldier associated with the 2000 coup has proposed that other disciplined forces implement reconciliation efforts similar to those recently undertaken by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Speaking anonymously during a question-and-answer session with the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Labasa, the soldier noted that some military personnel sustained injuries during their apprehension and while in custody. He stated, “It would be great if this was looked into.”
In response, Sashi Kiran, chairperson of the commission’s steering committee, clarified that the reconciliation initiatives of the RFMF and the commission’s broader reconciliation process are separate. “The RFMF’s reconciliation efforts are specifically aimed at resolving internal issues within the military organization,” she explained, commending the commitment shown by the military’s commander. Kiran emphasized the importance of the military’s role in facilitating national reconciliation, acknowledging the emotional strain involved in the process.
Kiran pointed out that the commission intends to address overarching national issues and to unveil the truth about past conflicts. She added that once fully developed, the commission would welcome participation from various stakeholders, noting that other organizations and church groups might already be conducting their own internal reconciliation efforts.
