Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the Chairman of the GREAT Council of Chiefs, has called for a revitalized and restructured Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to help restore public confidence. Speaking at a recent commemoration of the RFMF reconciliation and restoration program, Ratu Viliame urged senior officers to exemplify strong leadership values to inspire the younger generation.
He acknowledged that since 1987, there has been a growing distrust among the public towards the RFMF, attributing this deterioration to misguided leadership choices that have overshadowed the sacrifices made by past generations. He expressed a heartfelt concern for the current state of affairs, mentioning that the lifestyle being led today is unsustainable and unacceptable.
Ratu Viliame emphasized the need for the RFMF to distance itself from past turbulent actions such as coups and mutinies, advocating for a fresh start moving forward. He implored senior officers to impart valuable lessons to the next generation within the RFMF, emphasizing the importance of developing wise and godly leadership.
“We hope that as of today everything in the past will be left in the past,” he said, instilling hope for a new beginning for the military. As he looks to the future, Ratu Viliame believes that fostering a culture of positive leadership will be instrumental in regaining public trust for the RFMF.
This renewed call from a prominent leader reflects a broader desire within the community for a more transparent and responsible military that honors its history while also looking to the future with optimism. The hope is that this transformation will not only restore faith in the RFMF but also contribute to a more united and harmonious Fiji.
