The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to reinitiate its operations following its reinstatement by the government last year. In the past few months after its closure under the previous administration, PWD has received new machinery to enhance its functionality.
On Wednesday, three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers were delivered to Suva. The presentation of the new earthmoving equipment took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, with officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport in attendance.
Paula Baleilevuka, the ministry’s permanent secretary, stated that the arrival of the new machinery would significantly improve infrastructure development and capacity enhancement. He noted that these vehicles are part of a new fleet intended for use by the ministry.
“These machines will enhance road standards and conditions, thereby facilitating better access for economic activities,” Baleilevuka remarked. Furthermore, he emphasized that the new equipment would bolster the ministry’s ability to undertake road construction and maintenance projects, particularly in rural and remote areas.
The newly acquired machinery includes:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck
The total value of these eight machines amounts to $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the Ministry has been allocated $5 million to improve and upgrade rural roads. Baleilevuka confirmed that the equipment and vehicles will be deployed in forthcoming projects.
