President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take strong measures to safeguard his community from the escalating issue of illicit drug use. He voiced his worries about the rising prevalence of drug consumption throughout the nation.

Ratu Wiliame addressed the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held in Tamavua Village in Suva yesterday. He emphasized the need for collective efforts aimed at enhancing the province. He stated, “The vanua must collaborate with the youth and the community to tackle the pervasive social challenges facing our society.”

The President expressed his alarm over the harmful impact of drugs on the youth, emphasizing the importance of uniting to ensure both the vanua and the church take initiative in safeguarding the younger generations. He insisted that families and communities reiterate cultural values to instill respect for elders in children.

Ratu Wiliame urged residents to inspire young individuals who have dropped out of school to pursue technical education, thereby equipping them to address social issues and contribute positively to the community’s growth. He added, “It’s crucial that we refrain from blaming others. We must take responsibility and confront this challenge ourselves.”

He proposed the establishment of a comprehensive village profile initiative that would aid the government in delivering specific assistance to the people of Naitasiri. Furthermore, he encouraged the community to fight Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by embracing healthier diets.

“The Ministry of Health has reported that 80 percent of deaths result from NCDs. We need to consider what actions we can take as a province to mitigate this problem,” Ratu Wiliame remarked. He urged everyone to contemplate the traditional lifestyles and diets of their ancestors, stressing the importance of consuming locally grown food.
