President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri paramount chief Ratu Inoke Takiveikata to take strong measures to safeguard his community from the escalating drug crisis. During the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held in Tamavua Village, Suva, he expressed alarm over the rising trend of drug use nationwide.
Ratu Wiliame emphasized the necessity of collaboration among the vanua, youth, and community to tackle the pressing social challenges facing society. He shared his observations of the harmful impact of drugs on young people and voiced his deep concern for both current and future generations.
“It is crucial for us to unite and ensure that both the vanua and the church join forces to protect our children,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of reinforcing cultural values and respect for elders within families and the community.
He also noted the significance of encouraging school dropouts to pursue technical education to aid in overcoming social issues and contributing to community development. “We cannot blame others; it is our responsibility to confront this issue,” Ratu Wiliame asserted.
Additionally, he highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive village profile initiative to assist the government in providing targeted support for the people of Naitasiri. He urged the community to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) through improved dietary habits, citing that 80 percent of deaths are attributed to NCDs, according to the Ministry of Health.
“We need to consider what actions we can take as a province to address this concern,” he remarked, encouraging residents to reflect on the traditional lifestyles of their ancestors and prioritize consuming homegrown food.
