President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is poised to secure a second term in office by the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has confirmed that Parliament will convene on October 31 at 11 a.m. to appoint a President. Sources indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position.
Previously, on October 3, Parliament was set to nominate and appoint a President, with the relevant item listed as number 4 on the Order Paper for that session. However, this agenda was postponed following Mr. Rabuka’s acknowledgment of a potential disagreement regarding the presidential nomination.
Mr. Rabuka subsequently approached the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw item number 4, citing some concerns with the presidential nomination process. Meanwhile, the Opposition has remained silent regarding their own nomination.
