President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take strong action to safeguard his community from the escalating drug crisis. He voiced his worries about the rising levels of drug use in the nation.
Ratu Wiliame made these comments during the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held in Tamavua Village, Suva, yesterday. He emphasized the necessity of unity for the province’s welfare, stating, “The vanua needs to collaborate with the youths and the community to tackle the numerous social problems plaguing our society.”
Expressing his concern for both current and future generations, Ratu Wiliame noted, “Having witnessed firsthand the harmful effects of drugs on our youths, it’s crucial for us to come together and ensure cooperation between the vanua and the church to protect our children.” He stressed the importance of reinforcing cultural values and respect for elders within families and communities.
He also highlighted the importance of guiding young individuals who have dropped out of school towards technical schools to help them overcome social challenges and aid in community growth. “We should not lay blame on others. It is our responsibility to confront this issue,” he stated.
Ratu Wiliame proposed the establishment of a comprehensive village profile initiative to assist the government in providing targeted support to the people of Naitasiri. Additionally, he urged the community to tackle Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by adopting healthier dietary practices, noting that 80 percent of deaths in the nation are attributed to these diseases.
He challenged the community to reflect on the lifestyle of their ancestors, insisting on the importance of consuming locally grown food.
