Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the Chairman of the GREAT Council of Chiefs, has called for a reformation of the Republic of Fiji’s Military Forces (RFMF) to restore public trust. During an event to commemorate the RFMF’s reconciliation and restoration program, he urged senior military officers to exhibit leadership values that would serve as a model for the younger generation.

He highlighted that since 1987, there has been a persistent uncertainty regarding the RFMF’s role, leading to a loss of public confidence. Ratu Viliame emphasized that past misjudgments and inadequate leadership have caused significant pain and suffering, which remains evident today. He noted that the current state of affairs is unacceptable, expressing sympathy for the situation facing the iTaukei community.

Moving forward, Ratu Viliame asserted that the RFMF must refrain from engaging in destabilizing activities such as coups and mutinies that have characterized Fiji’s history. He expressed hope that the past could be left behind and emphasized the importance of nurturing a generation of leaders who are wise and guided by moral principles.

The plea from the Chairman resonates with a broader vision for a stronger and more trustworthy military to serve the nation, which would not only reassure citizens but also cultivate a sense of pride and unity among the different communities in Fiji. The call for reform points to a hopeful future where the RFMF can play a positive role in society, fostering stability and confidence.

Ratu Viliame’s background as a former RFMF Commanding Officer gives his words added weight, showcasing his commitment to both the military and the future of Fiji. With this initiative for reform, there is a glimmer of optimism that the RFMF can become a cornerstone of trust and leadership in the nation.
