The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Suku-na Bowl competition is set to highlight more than just athletic participation. This sentiment was emphasized by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the event’s official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted the challenge posed by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, underscoring the role of the respective forces in contributing to a better Fiji.

“It’s about the spirit we share in the forces, who we are, what we represent, and our responsibility toward the future of this country,” Kalouniwai stated. He noted that the RFMF has been on a path of reconciliation to pave a new way forward.

Kalouniwai expressed concern regarding the drug crisis faced by the Fiji Police Force, which is impacting local communities. He encouraged participants to embody the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl over the coming months while maintaining a strong moral stance in their duties.

Chew, in his remarks, reaffirmed that the home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is Nasova. “The Fiji Police Force is prepared to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa,” he declared. He also mentioned the unique challenges police officers face, being trained to approach situations with caution.

The Police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl last year with a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew emphasized the importance of advocating against drugs amidst the rising social issues in communities today. He reaffirmed that since the unveiling of the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa in 2022, it has always belonged to Nasova and will return there this year.

Salman Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Vodafone Fiji, expressed the nation’s passion for rugby, noting that the event represents more than just a competition; it symbolizes camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry. He urged the players to compete with integrity and pride, carrying the legacy of past champions.

The Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sporting events planned for the same week.
