Ratu Sukuna Bowl: More Than Just a Game

The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Suku-na Bowl competition is set to have a deeper significance beyond athletic participation. Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, conveyed this message during the event’s official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

The theme for this year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted a challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, emphasizing the responsibilities of the respective forces and their commitment to a better Fiji.

“It’s about more than winning or losing; it reflects the spirit we share in the forces and what we represent for the future of this country,” Kalouniwai stated. He highlighted the ongoing reconciliation efforts of the RFMF and recognized the challenges posed by drug-related issues within communities as a significant concern for the Fiji Police Force. He expressed hope that the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl would inspire the forces to maintain high moral standards in fulfilling their duties.

Chew reaffirmed the significance of Nasova as the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl, stating, “The Fiji Police Force is ready and looking forward to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa.” He remarked on the challenges police officers face due to their training, which fosters a cautious mindset in terms of strategy and competition.

Last year, the police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl title after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew emphasized the Police Force’s effort to combat rising social issues, advocating a stance against drugs. He also declared that the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa, showcased in 2022, must return to its home in Nasova this year.

Salman Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Vodafone Fiji, noted Fiji’s passion for rugby and how this event highlights the camaraderie and discipline of the disciplined forces as they compete not just for victory, but for a trophy rich in tradition. He encouraged players to embody integrity, passion, and pride, while also representing the legacy of previous champions and the hopes of future generations.

The Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at HFC Bank Stadium, along with the kickoff of other sporting events during that week.
