The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Suku-na Bowl competition is set to extend beyond mere sports participation. Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, conveyed this message during the official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.
This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug Free Nation through Family, Unity and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted the challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, emphasizing the responsibilities of both forces in working towards a better Fiji.
“It’s more than just winning or losing; it embodies the spirit of our forces, our identity, and our commitment to the future of this nation,” stated Kalouniwai. He highlighted that in recent months, the RFMF has embarked on a path of reconciliation, aiming to reshape its future. Additionally, he acknowledged the Fiji Police Force’s struggle with the growing drug crisis affecting communities and expressed hope that the principles of the Sukuna Bowl would guide them to uphold high moral standards in their duties.
In response, Chew noted that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl and expressed readiness from the police to defend the trophy. “As career police officers, we are trained to be vigilant and consider the strategies at play,” he remarked. The police managed to retain the Ratu Sukuna Bowl last year after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi.
Chew highlighted the necessity of addressing the increasing social issues, advocating a firm stance against drugs. He affirmed that since the unveiling of the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa in 2022, its rightful place has been in Nasova, and it will return there this year.
Salman Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Vodafone Fiji, emphasized the nation’s passion for rugby, stating that this event showcases the disciplined forces competing not just for triumph but for a trophy that symbolizes camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry. He urged players to compete with integrity, pride, and to carry the aspirations and legacy of past champions while looking forward to future generations.
The Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, coinciding with the beginning of other sports events that week.
