Ratu Sukuna Bowl: More Than Just a Game

The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Suku-na Bowl competition encompasses more than just athletic participation. This message was conveyed by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted a challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, emphasizing the responsibility of both forces in contributing to a better Fiji.

Kalouniwai stated, “It is more than just winning or losing; it encapsulates the spirit within our forces, who we are, what we represent, and what we can accomplish for the future of this country.” He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been focused on reconciliation in recent months to pave a new path forward. He also addressed the challenges posed by drug crises affecting communities, expressing hope that the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl will encourage high moral conduct in fulfilling their duties.

Chew, while extending his challenge to the RFMF, asserted that Nasova is the rightful home for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl. “The Fiji Police Force is ready and eager to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa,” he remarked. Chew also acknowledged that as career police officers, they maintain a cautious perspective on potential strategies at play.

Last year, the Police held onto the Ratu Sukuna Bowl after a draw, 11-11, at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. Chew reiterated their stance against drugs, advocating for community awareness regarding rising social issues.

Since the unveiling of the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa in 2022, it has firmly established its home in Nasova, and Chew pledged it would return there this year.

Salman Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Vodafone Fiji, added, “Fiji is a nation passionate about rugby, and this event allows our disciplined forces to compete not only for victory but for a trophy that embodies camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry.” He encouraged the players to compete with integrity, passion, and pride, reminding them of the legacy of past champions as well as the hopes of future generations.

The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sports events planned for that week.
