The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl is set to be much more than just a sports event, as emphasized by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva. The theme for this year’s competition is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.”
Kalouniwai accepted the challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, highlighting the importance of the respective forces’ roles in contributing to a better Fiji. He stated, “It is more than about winning or losing; it embodies the spirit of our forces and our responsibilities towards this country’s future.”
He also mentioned the RFMF’s recent commitment to reconciliation, aiming to forge a new path forward while recognizing the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing battle against drug-related issues affecting communities. Kalouniwai expressed hope that the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl will inspire both forces to uphold high moral standards in their duties.
Chew affirmed that the Fiji Police Force regards Nasova as the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl and expressed readiness to defend the trophy, which they retained last year after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. He voiced concerns over the social challenges faced by communities and emphasized the importance of advocating against drug use.
Vodafone Fiji’s Chief Commercial Officer, Salman Khan, recognized the deep passion Fijians have for rugby, noting that the event showcases disciplined forces competing not just for victory but for a trophy symbolizing camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry. He encouraged players to compete with integrity and keep the aspirations of past champions and future generations in mind.
The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, alongside other sports events scheduled for that week.
