The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Suku-na Bowl is set to be more than just a sporting event, according to Major General Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. His remarks were made during the official launch of the competition at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.
This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai emphasized that the focus goes beyond merely winning or losing; it is about the commitment of the respective forces to contribute to a better Fiji.
He remarked, “It’s about the spirit that we all have in the forces, who we are, what we represent, and what we can do for the future of this country.” He also highlighted the recent efforts of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to reconcile its past and establish a positive path forward.
Kalouniwai acknowledged the Fiji Police Force’s challenges regarding the drug crisis affecting communities. He expressed hope that embodying the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl will enable both forces to uphold high moral standards in fulfilling their duties.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, while challenging the RFMF, stated that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl. He expressed the Police Force’s eagerness to defend the trophy which they retained last year following an 11-11 draw at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
Chew commented on the pressing social issues faced by communities, emphasizing the importance of advocating against drug use. He declared that the Ratu Sukuna tanoa has a permanent home in Nasova.
Salman Khan, Chief Commercial Officer of Vodafone Fiji, noted the nation’s passion for rugby and the significance of this event as a platform for the disciplined forces to compete, not just for victory but for a trophy that symbolizes camaraderie and spirited rivalry. He urged players to compete with integrity and pride, keeping in mind the legacy of past champions and the aspirations of future generations.
The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is November 8, with other sports events planned for the same week.
