The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition aims to go beyond mere sports participation. This message was emphasized by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted a challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, stating that the focus should be on the responsibilities of the respective forces and their contributions to a better Fiji.

Kalouniwai noted, “It is more than just winning or losing; it’s about the spirit we share in the forces, our identity, and our potential to shape the future of this country.” He highlighted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been on a path towards reconciliation, aiming to foster a new direction for the organization. He also addressed the Fiji Police Force’s challenges, particularly concerning drug-related issues impacting communities, expressing hope that both forces would uphold high moral standards in their duties leading up to the Sukuna Bowl.

Chew affirmed his challenge to the RFMF, declaring that Nasova should be recognized as the rightful location for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl. He expressed confidence in the Fiji Police Force’s readiness to defend the Ratu Sukuna trophy, which they retained last year after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew emphasized the need to confront rising social issues by advocating a stance against drugs and reaffirmed that the Ratu Sukuna trophy has a permanent home in Nasova.

Salman Khan, Vodafone Fiji’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed that Fiji has a deep passion for rugby, and this event underscores the competition between disciplined forces not only for victory but also for a trophy that represents camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry. He urged the players to compete with integrity and carry the legacy of past champions and the aspirations of future generations.

The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sports activities planned for the same week.
