Ratu Sukuna Bowl: More Than Just a Game

The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition is being emphasized as more than just a sports event. This message was conveyed by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, on Tuesday.

The theme for this year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug Free Nation Through Family, Unity and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted a challenge laid down by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, highlighting the responsibilities of both forces in contributing to a better Fiji.

Kalouniwai stated, “It’s more than about winning or losing; it’s about the spirit within the forces, who we are, what we represent, and what we can achieve for the future of this country.” He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has been on a path of reconciliation, seeking to move forward positively, while acknowledging the Fiji Police Force’s struggles with drug-related issues affecting communities. He expressed hope that both forces would embody the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl while maintaining a high moral ground in their duties.

Chew, in his challenge to the RFMF, asserted that Nasova rightfully hosts the Ratu Sukuna Bowl, stating, “The Fiji Police Force is ready and looking forward to defending the Ratu Sukuna tanoa.” He acknowledged their training, which fosters a naturally suspicious mindset, suggesting that they are curious about potential strategies or power plays at work.

Last year, the Police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew emphasized the need to say no to drugs in light of rising social issues in the communities. He reaffirmed that since the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa was first showcased in 2022, its home would remain in Nasova.

Salman Khan, chief commercial officer of Vodafone Fiji, remarked, “Fiji is a nation passionate about rugby, and this event allows our disciplined forces to compete not just for victory, but for a trophy that embodies camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry.” He urged the players to compete with integrity, passion, and pride, honoring their aspirations and the legacies of past champions.

The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with other sports events scheduled to start that same week.
