Opposition Member of Parliament Parveen Kumar has urged the Government to instruct the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) to finalize an agreement established years ago between the Rakiraki Town Council and the miller concerning the FSC ground.
During the discussion on the Rakiraki Town Council’s Annual Report for 2019, Mr. Kumar explained that the FSC ground, which includes the golf course, was allocated to the council some time ago. He criticized the Coalition Government for its failure to formalize this agreement.
“This delay is unacceptable to the Rakiraki Town Council and the residents of Rakiraki,” Mr. Kumar stated. He further emphasized the importance of the ground, mentioning that besides the Sports Council’s facilities in Rakiraki, it is the only available ground for the community.
Mr. Kumar noted that the previous Bainimarama administration successfully negotiated with the FSC to transfer the ground and golf course to the council. In response, Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed that they are in discussions with the Ministry of Sugar regarding the matter.
“There have been consultations about the potential for the council to lease the FSC sports ground,” Mr. Nalumisa said. He added that one of the council’s plans, if granted the lease, is to improve the area to serve as a proper sports venue for the people of Rakiraki and the surrounding region.
