Rakiraki’s Ground Agreement: A Call for Action Amid Delays

Opposition Member of Parliament Parveen Kumar has urged the Government to instruct the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) to promptly establish an agreement made with the Rakiraki Town Council concerning the FSC ground several years ago.

During his remarks on the Rakiraki Town Council’s Annual Report for 2019, Kumar highlighted that the FSC ground, which encompasses a golf course, was allocated to the council years ago, but the Coalition Government has not formalized this agreement.

“This delay is unacceptable to the Rakiraki Town Council and the residents of Rakiraki,” Kumar stated. He emphasized the need for immediate action, noting that aside from the Sports Council’s facilities, the FSC ground is the only available area for recreational activities in the region.

Kumar recalled that the previous Bainimarama administration successfully negotiated with the FSC to transfer the ground and golf course to the council. In response to these concerns, Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa indicated that discussions with the Ministry of Sugar were ongoing regarding the matter.

Nalumisa mentioned, “As previously referenced by Mr. Bala (Mr. Kumar), we are in talks and engaging with the Ministry of Sugar about the potential lease agreement for the FSC sports ground.” He added that if the council is granted the lease, they plan to enhance the area into a more suitable sports facility for the people of Rakiraki and the broader Ra region.
