Government officials and the Rakiraki Town Council are intensifying their efforts to mitigate flooding in Rakiraki. A survey from 2022 indicated that the town faced losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to the damage caused by 27 flooding incidents.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa addressed Parliament, highlighting the ongoing flooding issues in Rakiraki, which are primarily attributed to its geographical features and climate. Key areas impacted include Naqoro Flat and the backroad of the Nakauvadra Range.

Rakiraki frequently experiences flash floods during heavy rainfall, particularly in the wet season and cyclone period. “Since 2018, we have recorded 27 flood events, with an average of four floods per year in Rakiraki. This figure is quite significant,” stated Mr. Nalumisa.

Flooding often leads to the closure of the town, with primary roads and businesses taking up to three days to recover from the aftermath. The 2022 Rakiraki Town Council survey reported business losses of approximately $200,000 to $300,000, which severely impacts the livelihoods in this small town.

The minister noted that following floods, there is an increase in health risks such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever due to contaminated water and poor sanitation, along with a rise in mosquito populations.

To address these challenges, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy, which includes operational plans that are typically activated in November and concluded by the following April.
