Government officials and the Rakiraki Town Council are intensifying efforts to mitigate flooding in Rakiraki. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that the town suffered losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to the impact of 27 floods.
Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa addressed Parliament, highlighting that flooding has been a longstanding issue in Rakiraki, largely due to its geographical features and climatic factors. Notably, Naqoro Flat and the Nakauvadra Range backroad are among the most affected areas.
Rakiraki faces a heightened risk of flash flooding during heavy rainfall, particularly in the wet and cyclone seasons. Minister Nalumisa pointed out that between 2018 and the present, 27 floods have been recorded, averaging four floods annually, which he described as significant. He noted that flooding typically leads to the closure of the town, with public roads and businesses taking two to three days to clear.
The Minister also cited concerns that the aftermath of flooding breeds health risks, including leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever, resulting from contaminated water and poor sanitation, along with an increase in disease-carrying mosquitoes.
In response to these challenges, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy, which encompasses the Disaster Management Operation. This plan is usually activated in November and remains in effect until April.
