Sweeper-cum-goalkeeper Krishneel Raju made a decisive penalty save, leading Rakiraki to an 8-7 victory over Dreketi in penalties, securing the Senior Division title of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship in Lautoka today.
The 30-year-old expressed immense joy and pride following what he described as the most critical save of his career.
“I used to play goalkeeper before, and the Coach had faith in my abilities. I thank him and my teammates for believing in me, and I give thanks to God for providing me with strength and guidance,” Raju stated.
He added, “Our last win was in 2016, and it was time for us to step up and make our district proud. I am thrilled to have played a part in achieving this dream.”
Rakiraki Coach and President, Shalvin Ram, was visibly emotional, praising his players for their resilience throughout the season and the tournament.
“We faced many ups and downs, but we remained united, focused on one goal: to win the IDC and make our families and the people of Ra proud,” he said.
The final match, played under scorching sun, did not see any goals during normal or extra time. The dramatic penalty shootout featured several missed attempts from both teams before Sandeep Ram scored for Rakiraki, with Raju’s save sealing the victory.
As a reward for their triumph, Rakiraki walks away with $3,500, while Dreketi receives $1,500 for making it to the final.
