Sweeper-cum-goalkeeper Krishneel Raju made a pivotal save during the penalty shootout, helping Rakiraki secure an 8-7 victory against Dreketi to win the Senior Division title at the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship in Lautoka today. The 30-year-old was overwhelmed with joy after making what he considered the most critical save of his career.

“I used to play goalkeeper before, and the Coach had confidence in me and my abilities. I thank him and the players for their faith and I thank God Almighty for giving me the strength and guidance,” Raju expressed. He added, “We last won in 2016, and it was time for us to step up and do our district proud. I am happy to have helped them achieve this dream.”

An emotional Shalvin Ram, Rakiraki’s Coach and President, praised his players for their resilience throughout the season and the tournament. “We had many ups and downs but stayed together as a team and believed in one goal and one mission, which was to win the IDC and make our families and the people of Ra proud,” he said.

The final match, played under intense heat, ended goalless after normal and extra time. The dramatic penalty shootout saw both teams miss several opportunities before Sandeep Ram scored for Rakiraki, with Raju securing the win by saving Dreketi’s final attempt.

As a result of their victory, Rakiraki will take home $3,500, while Dreketi will receive $1,500 for reaching the final.
