Sweeper-cum-goalkeeper Krishneel Raju made a pivotal save during the penalty shootout, helping Rakiraki triumph over Dreketi with a score of 8-7 in penalties to secure the Senior Division title at the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship in Lautoka. The thrilled 30-year-old expressed his joy following what he deemed the most critical save of his career.

“I used to play goalkeeper before, and the Coach knew and had confidence in me and my abilities. I thank him and the players for their faith and I thank the God Almighty for giving me the strength and guidance,” Raju shared.

He added, “We last won in 2016, and it was time for us to step up and make our district proud. I’m happy to have contributed to achieving this dream.”

Rakiraki’s Coach and President, Shalvin Ram, expressed pride in his players, who faced numerous challenges throughout the season and in this tournament. “We had many ups and downs but stayed united as a team, believing in one goal and one mission, which was to win the IDC and make our families and the people of Ra proud,” Ram stated.

The final match, played under sweltering conditions, ended without any goals during normal and extra time. The penalty shootout was tense, with both teams missing multiple attempts until Sandeep Ram scored for Rakiraki, while Raju secured the victory with his decisive save.

As a result of their victory, Rakiraki takes home $3,500, while Dreketi earns $1,500 for their runner-up finish.
