Rakiraki and Tavua Towns Tackle $133K Rate Dilemma with Discounts

Rakiraki and Tavua town councils are currently dealing with a total debt of $133,000 in unpaid rates. The Rakiraki Town Council is owed $107,000, while the Tavua Town Council faces arrears of $26,000. Despite Tavua collecting 76 percent of its rates, Rakiraki struggles with a collection rate of just 55 percent.

To encourage ratepayers to clear their dues, both councils have implemented incentives, including a seven percent discount for full payments this month, and a five percent discount for payments made by September for those experiencing financial hardship.

Sailosi Sawana, the chief executive officer of the Tavua/Rakiraki town councils, noted that additional measures include filing claims with the Small Claims Tribunal. He pointed out that even if some ratepayers pay off their arrears in the 2023-2024 financial year, the overall arrears will continue to grow due to unpaid rates for the same period.

Sawana emphasized the challenges both councils face in collecting town rates, particularly due to their rural settings which often result in irregular incomes for many ratepayers. He acknowledged those who have civic pride and consistently pay their rates, expressing appreciation for their commitment.

The councils are urging ratepayers to settle their outstanding balances and take advantage of the discount offers. Sawana highlighted the importance of ratepayers in supporting the council’s operations, which include essential services such as street cleaning, drainage maintenance, grass cutting, waste collection, and beautification efforts. He noted that many of these services are provided at minimal or no cost, yet they play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and appeal of the towns.
