Raising Voices: Supporting Fiji’s Youth in the Fight Against Diabetes

Some teenagers, facing challenges related to acceptance and support from their families, have contemplated suicide, according to Marawa Kini, acting executive officer of Diabetes Fiji. A significant obstacle for the organization is addressing cultural beliefs, customs, and stigma that hinder young individuals from obtaining necessary support.

Mr. Kini emphasized that Diabetes Fiji is dedicated to collaborating with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, government entities, faith-based groups, and the media to tackle these issues. He urged the government to enhance investment in public health programs organized by Diabetes Fiji and has reached out to regional and international organizations for assistance with their initiatives.

“If we do not address the challenges associated with diabetes, we will see a growing number of Fijians in need of hospitalization,” Mr. Kini warned. Diabetes Fiji had submitted a proposal for inclusion in the 2024-25 National Budget, but unfortunately, no financial support has been forthcoming from the government.

“As a charitable organization, we are always open to receiving any form of support, whether in kind or financial, from generous donors to further our important work,” Mr. Kini stated. He expressed gratitude toward parents who are dedicated to caring for their children and highlighted that Diabetes Fiji offers programs designed to support parents through training and advocacy.
