Children in Fiji are protected by a constitution that values their rights, equality, and dignity, according to Mohenesh Singh, Counsellor and Founder of the Healing Hands Foundation. Mr. Singh stressed the significance of safeguarding children from violence, exploitation, and abuse, noting that this is not just a moral imperative but also a legal requirement under the Child Protection Policy and the Social Welfare Act of 2010.
In response to a disturbing video circulating on social media that depicted a father violently disciplining his children while attempting to teach them numbers, Mr. Singh expressed his dismay. He condemned such behavior as shocking and unacceptable, emphasizing that the law has a zero-tolerance stance on any form of child abuse.
He highlighted that forcing children to learn is counterproductive, as each child develops at their own pace and learns in ways that suit their individual abilities. Mr. Singh lamented the continuing prevalence of a culture that resorts to violence for control, noting, “It is sad to see that some still believe inflicting harm is the way to get things done.”
The importance of fostering a positive learning environment was a key focus for Mr. Singh, who explained that children flourish when they feel engaged, comfortable, and supported in their education. He called on the government to enhance awareness around positive parenting skills, particularly for young parents. He likened the need for training in parenting to the assessments people undergo when applying for a driving license, advocating for young couples to participate in family life training and parenting programs.
Mr. Singh emphasized that parenting necessitates significant patience and dedication, stating, “It is easy to bring a child into this world, but it takes effort and love to provide the care they need. So please, stop hurting them.” He also proposed employing child-friendly teaching techniques, such as number songs, sand writing, and games, to improve learning experiences.
The Healing Hands Foundation remains dedicated to supporting government initiatives aimed at promoting positive parenting and child counseling. Mr. Singh concluded by stressing the need to create critical thinkers, which can only be achieved in safe, supportive, and child-friendly environments.
Summary: Mohenesh Singh, founder of the Healing Hands Foundation, advocates for the protection of children in Fiji under existing laws that prohibit violence and abuse. He urges a shift towards positive parenting practices and the implementation of training programs for young parents. Singh underscores the importance of nurturing learning environments that encourage children’s natural development and critical thinking capabilities.
The message of fostering a supportive environment for children is hopeful and aligns with a growing understanding of positive parenting methods across the globe. Promoting such practices not only helps in raising well-rounded individuals but ultimately contributes to a more compassionate society.
