Hearing care remains a neglected area for many, with a significant number of individuals unaware of how to properly maintain their ear health, according to audiometrist Nasif Mohammed of Hearing Aid Services in Australia. During a recent two-day screening event at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, Mohammed attended to 40 patients, whose ages ranged from four to 80 years old.
The screenings revealed that many patients were grappling with various ear issues, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, earwax blockage, and scar tissue. Some patients experienced ear discharge and struggled to clean their ears properly.
Mr. Mohammed highlighted a concerning lack of audiometric services in Northern Fiji, commenting that many individuals seeking medical advice must travel to Suva for assistance. He expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will consider sending an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist monthly to Labasa, facilitating easier access to necessary care for local patients.
During his visit, he encountered a female patient with hearing impairment who felt disheartened in the clinic. The emotional impact of his treatment was evident when, after receiving a hearing aid, the patient was overcome with happiness as she could suddenly hear voices. Mohammed also worked with students from the Labasa School for Special Education, noting that many required urgent medical attention and hearing aids.
Reflecting on past experiences, he mentioned that similar services were conducted in partnership with the Lions Club Labasa before the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed a desire for further collaborative efforts, especially for children needing medical attention. Acknowledging the challenges faced by those with hearing impairments, he emphasized the profound impact of hearing loss on an individual’s quality of life and communication abilities.
The broader awareness of ear health issues is critical, as many individuals live in silence and isolation due to untreated hearing problems. Mohammed’s commitment to raising awareness and addressing these health concerns offers hope for improved care and support in the region.
In summary, Nasif Mohammed’s efforts shed light on the urgent need for better ear care access in Northern Fiji, revealing both the challenges faced by individuals with hearing impairments and a path forward through greater awareness and local medical resources.
