In Suva City, the rainy weather has not deterred three resilient women from the Western Division as they continue to sell mangoes to support their families. Despite facing challenging conditions for several weeks, Anaise Gucake, 55, Sereima Sabeta, 52, and Laisiana Tinaitukana, also 52, have been dedicated to their entrepreneurial efforts.
Anaise Gucake shared her approach, explaining that she transports mangoes from Vadravadra Village in Ba during the night, enabling her to sell the fruit early in the morning. She expressed gratitude to the owner of Integrated Restaurant for allowing her to set up her stall outside and use the restroom facilities. Gucake has been selling at Walu Bay for three weeks and manages to earn around $300 from her sales, despite spending $45 on bus fare for transporting her goods.
Sereima Sabeta, who supports her family as the sole breadwinner, turned to mango selling due to a slowdown in her sugarcane cutting job. She highlighted the challenges of transportation costs, stating that using a carrier for larger quantities would set her back $400. In contrast, she has opted to sell in a location where there is less competition than the crowded Suva Municipal Market.
Laisiana Tinaitukana, who usually sells root crops and vegetables in Nausori, joined the two women to capitalize on the mango season after visiting her son’s village in Ba to acquire mangoes. She has found success selling in Suva and is pleased with the profits she has made, reinforcing her determination to support her family.
Despite the obstacles they’ve encountered, these women exemplify resilience and determination in their quest to earn a living. Their efforts not only contribute to their families’ well-being but also inspire others to persevere through difficulties. The positive impact of their work reflects the strength of community support and the spirit of entrepreneurship among women.
In a broader context, their stories embody the strength and resourcefulness of women in challenging environments, showcasing how they can adapt and thrive despite adverse conditions. This narrative serves as a hopeful reminder of the potential for resilience and innovation in everyday life.
