Radrodro’s U-Turn: What’s Next for Fiji Rugby?

The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has decided to revise his stance on the ongoing issues related to the Vodafone Super Deans, driven by concerns raised by various stakeholders regarding student welfare. As of yesterday, Radrodro expressed his support for the Fiji Secondary School Rugby Union (FSSRU) following their decision about the under-17 teams from Bucalevu and Nabua Secondary Schools.

Radrodro confirmed, “Yes, I have reconsidered my position and supported the FSSRU.” This endorsement has clarified that Nabua Secondary School is set to participate in the Deans quarter-finals today.

He emphasized the importance of student welfare, mentioning that he had discussions with the Ministry for Sports and noted concerns from the Fiji Rugby Union and the referees’ association. “For the benefit and good of the game, I have supported the FSSRU,” Radrodro added. He stated that considering the late notice for Bucalevu Secondary School would be unfair, which influenced his decision.

Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, noted that although they did not have a meeting on Thursday night, he had previously communicated his concerns. “I raised my concerns with him yesterday morning and emphasized the need to respect the decision of FSSRU. I’m grateful that Radrodro has chosen to work with us,” Saukuru said. He warned that if the issue escalated to World Rugby, it could have serious consequences.

Despite Radrodro’s earlier directive to review the match results between Bucalevu and Nabua, the FSSRU remained firm in its commitment to its constitution and the regulations governing the sport. The FSSRU received support from the Fiji Rugby Union, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and various provincial rugby unions, who all maintained the importance of adhering to the rules of the game.
