Sainiana Radrodro has declined an offer from the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, for her nomination as the Speaker of Parliament. Ms. Radrodro, who has a diverse background as a civil servant, journalist, and lawyer, explained that the proposal took her by surprise.
Upon receiving the offer last week, she questioned Mr. Seruiratu on why she had been chosen for the role. While she acknowledged the opposition’s reasoning, which likely stemmed from her extensive experience in government and legal expertise, she ultimately refused the nomination.
Ms. Radrodro cited her relationship as the wife of the Minister for Education, indicating that it would be inappropriate for her to preside over Parliament while her husband’s ministry was involved.
