Sainiana Radrodro, a member of the Social Democratic Liberal Party and a lawyer from Suva, has declined the opportunity to be nominated as the Speaker of Parliament by the Leader of the Opposition. Radrodro emphasized that the role of Speaker should be filled by someone independent, who upholds the rule of law and operates with integrity, ensuring the trust of the public.
In her discussion with media outlet FijiLive, Radrodro expressed that her position as the spouse of a Government MP could pose a conflict of interest, making her ineligible for the post. She stated, “For me to be nominated would be wrong,” and stressed the importance of maintaining public confidence in governmental processes.
Radrodro also expressed her disappointment over the leaking of this information to the media, stating that it was not something she intended to announce publicly. When asked why her name was among the candidates, she noted that the Opposition recognized her extensive public sector experience and her leadership roles in women’s forums.
She made it clear that had she been considered by the Government for the role, she would have similarly declined. For Radrodro, this decision is rooted not just in numbers but in honoring the significance of the Speaker’s position. As she articulately put it, earning and maintaining public trust in governance is crucial.
Despite her decision, which reflects a commitment to ethical standards, the Opposition has confirmed they will nominate former FijiFirst MP Ruveni Nadalo for the Speaker position.
This incident illustrates a growing emphasis on integrity and independence within the political realm of Fiji. Radrodro’s principled stance on this matter conveys a hopeful vision for a governance system that prioritizes public faith and accountability, encouraging other political figures to consider similar ethical considerations in their roles.
