Race Heats Up for Top Cop Position as Deadline Approaches

Several former senior police officers, including some currently serving, have expressed interest in the position of Police Commissioner. Notable candidates include former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, former Police Chief of Operation Abdul Khan, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Internal Affairs and Professional Standards Sakeo Ganivatu.

Prime Minister and Chair of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), Sitiveni Rabuka, announced that the deadline for applications is September 30. He emphasized the need for potential candidates to apply but withheld further details at this stage.

Other individuals considered for the role include former senior police officers Luke Navela, Unaisi Vuniwaqa, Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security, and Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew. Khan noted he is contemplating applying, while Tudravu mentioned he has not submitted his application yet as he is currently at his village, although he had earlier stated an intention to apply.

Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has previously indicated that finding a permanent Commissioner should be a priority and urged the COC to expedite the appointment, highlighting its importance amid the ongoing national drug crisis. He expressed a preference for a local candidate with relevant experience rather than an outsider.

The COC Secretary, Ropate Green, stated that the selected individual must be aware of the public’s perception of the police role and be committed to fostering an image of accountability, transparency, and integrity within the organization.

The application period will close at 4pm on September 30.
