Race for Top Cop Heats Up: Who Will Rise to the Challenge?

Several former senior police officials, including some who are still serving, have expressed their intention to apply for the role of Police Commissioner. Notable candidates include former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, former Chief of Operations Abdul Khan, and Assistant Commissioner of Internal Affairs and Professional Standards Sakeo Ganivatu.

Prime Minister and chair of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the application period will close on September 30. He stated, “I cannot release anything yet; applications are open, and we invite interested applicants to apply for the position.”

Among the other potential candidates for the position are former senior police officer Luke Navela, Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security Unaisi Vuniwaqa, and Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew. Khan mentioned he has not yet submitted his application but is considering it. Tudravu has also indicated that he has not applied yet, as he is currently at his village, although he previously expressed his intention to apply.

Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua emphasized the urgency of filling the substantive Commissioner of Police role, stating it should be a priority due to its importance in addressing the national drug crisis. He expressed a preference for local candidates with appropriate experience and qualifications rather than outsiders.

In the job advertisement, COC Secretary Ropate Green highlighted the need for the selected candidate to be aware of public perceptions of the police force. He stated that the new commissioner must be committed to fostering an organization that is seen as accountable, transparent, and free of corruption.

The application deadline is set for the end of this month, specifically no later than 4 p.m. on September 30.
