Rabuka’s Stance: Is the Death Penalty the Solution to Drug Issues?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his belief that the death penalty is not a solution to drug-related issues, despite suggestions that it could act as a deterrent. He highlighted concerns regarding the irreversible nature of capital punishment, noting that there have been instances globally where new evidence emerged long after an execution that could have altered the case’s outcome.

Rabuka emphasized the need for caution when making such irrevocable decisions, considering their wider implications. This response comes in light of recent comments made by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection, who advocated for death sentences for drug traffickers.

The Prime Minister has faced calls from various politicians, religious figures, and human rights advocates to take action against Tabuya, with some demanding her dismissal for her remarks. However, Rabuka stated that he has not yet met with Tabuya to discuss the issue and is waiting for a formal complaint before moving forward.
