Illustration of Reconciliation should have had Bainimarama and Qiliho: Rabuka

Rabuka’s Request: A Misstep in Reconciliation Ceremony

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged that his office did not properly follow protocol when attempting to involve his predecessor Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho in a reconciliation event last Saturday at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed his hope that both Bainimarama and Qiliho could be released from the Fiji Corrections Service to participate in the proceedings. He mentioned that he had asked President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere if arrangements could be made for their release and even requested the event organizers to hold off for a while as both individuals were en route to the event. Unfortunately, neither Bainimarama nor Qiliho was able to attend, prompting Rabuka to apologize to the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, for the oversight in their absence.

Rabuka later acknowledged that his request should have been directed to the Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa. Instead, he sent his note to the President, having not seen the Commissioner at the event. The Prime Minister realized that the President does not have the authority to grant such releases, which ultimately led to time constraints that prevented both Bainimarama and Qiliho from attending.

This situation highlights the complexities involved in political processes and reconciliation efforts. It serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication and established procedures in government interactions. Looking ahead, this experience may lead to improved coordination for future events, fostering a more inclusive atmosphere for reconciliation in Fiji’s political landscape.
