Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has firmly rejected the notion of retiring from politics, asserting that political engagement transcends holding a formal office. In response to a question about his plans after his current term, he remarked, “What do you mean by retiring from politics? Who can ever retire from politics?”
Rabuka emphasized that one can disengage from a political party but remains politically active through voting and voicing opinions. “I can retire from the political party, but we will continue to be in politics because we vote and we air our views,” he stated.
Despite facing some health issues, including occasional knee pain, Rabuka received support from his party, with People’s Alliance vice president Ratu Jo Dimuri asserting that the Prime Minister is still able to lead in the forthcoming elections. Dimuri acknowledged public sentiment regarding Rabuka’s health but argued that the Prime Minister has the capability to lead.
The willingness to stay involved in politics aligns with earlier comments made by Rabuka regarding speculation about his future candidacy for the 2026 elections. While he has not declared whether he will run again—due to concerns over his party aligning with its original manifesto amid a Coalition Government—Rabuka recognized the strong desire among party members for his leadership. This reflects a shared commitment to pursue the collective vision of the People’s Alliance.
Encouraging active participation, Rabuka has invited supporters to engage in discussions about the party’s direction, reinforcing the idea that the party’s manifesto may evolve based on collective input. This openness to collaboration seems to foster optimism within the party as they prepare for future electoral challenges.
Overall, Rabuka’s stance and the ongoing support from his party members showcase a resilient commitment to serve and adapt to the evolving political landscape, emphasizing the belief in a cooperative effort guided by public will for the nation’s betterment.
