Rabuka’s ‘Ocean for Peace’ Policy Set for UN Spotlight

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that his next visit to the United Nations General Assembly will coincide with the Pacific Islands Forum’s endorsement of his ‘Ocean for Peace’ policy, which he introduced at the recent 53rd Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting in Tonga. During the launch of Fiji’s Foreign Policy White Paper, Rabuka mentioned that he planned to present the ‘Oceans for Peace’ initiative at last year’s UNGA meeting in New York. He noted that while this policy was adopted during the last meeting in Tonga, the framework is anticipated to be officially accepted at the upcoming forum in Honiara, Solomon Islands, next year. The Prime Minister also revealed that he has requested President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to represent him at this week’s 79th United Nations General Assembly. Furthermore, Rabuka indicated that the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is collaborating with the Fijian government to draft a plan advocating for peace and security among Pacific nations.
