Rabuka’s Inquiry Dilemma: Can He Take Action Against Corruption?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has explained that he does not have the authority to initiate a Commission of Inquiry into the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). He stated that such an inquiry can only be initiated by the President, based on the Prime Minister’s advice. Currently, Rabuka is reviewing the Commission of Inquiries Act, which will guide his recommendations to the President.

He emphasized the importance of a prompt process, noting that many Fijians are questioning the integrity of certain institutions, and a swift uncovering of the facts is beneficial for everyone involved. Rabuka also mentioned that the members of the Commission have yet to be decided but assured that this will be resolved soon. He remains dedicated to fostering transparency and accountability throughout the process and appreciates the public’s patience as they navigate these discussions.
