Rabuka’s Call for Truth: Will Speight Unveil the Past?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that he will continue to be seen as a victim of the 2000 coup until coup leader George Speight reveals the names of those involved in the takeover of the Mahendra Chaudhry-led Government on May 19. In a media interaction, Rabuka emphasized the importance of Speight’s involvement in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and encouraged him to be truthful about the events.

When asked about his own participation in the 1987 coup, the Prime Minister noted that his actions during the overthrow of the Bavadra-led Government are documented in the 1990, 1997, and 2013 constitutions, asserting that his role is constitutional.

Rabuka also mentioned that he has not spoken with George Speight since Speight’s pardon and release by the President, following recommendations from the Mercy Commission. “I have not communicated with him nor had the opportunity to speak with him,” he said.

The Prime Minister assured all Fijians, especially the Indo-Fijian community, that they are safe following Speight’s release. “I believe they are very safe! They have nothing to worry about from his release along with Mr. Shane Stevens… Everything is normal, and we will alleviate any concerns,” he added.
