Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced his intention to run in the 2026 General Election. This statement comes despite his recent advocacy for increased youth and female representation within his political party at a meeting held in Lautoka. When asked about his plans for the upcoming elections, Mr. Rabuka responded decisively, affirming, “Yes, I will.”
His confirmation also dismisses recent rumors circulating in party circles regarding a potential snap election. Mr. Rabuka’s leadership has been under scrutiny in light of the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), who is currently under investigation by the same commission.
The timing of Ms. Malimali’s appointment has raised questions, particularly since it coincided with the Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, facing potential charges from FICAC. While the Commissioner is appointed by the Judicial Services Commission, many anticipated that the Prime Minister, as the head of government, would take action amidst the controversy.
Mr. Prasad’s case is currently on hold pending a review by the newly appointed commissioner. Political leaders have urged the Prime Minister to step in and initiate an investigation into Ms. Malimali’s appointment, calling it a potential violation of the corruption watchdog’s independence. Mr. Rabuka has yet to update the public on this issue.
Additionally, Ms. Malimali’s case has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and is now with the Criminal Investigations Department.
In related news, the Prime Minister indicated that the coalition Government would soon select a nominee for the presidential position. Mr. Rabuka had previously suggested that President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere was suitable for another term, although this stance faced opposition during a recent meeting of the People’s Alliance in Lautoka. He confirmed that discussions regarding the nominee will take place soon as Ratu Wiliame’s first term is set to conclude this November.
