Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has revealed that he took the initiative to inform President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere about an impending investigation by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) that may involve him. This disclosure occurred during a brief meeting in New Zealand last month. Rabuka was there for an official visit and to celebrate Fiji Day when he met with the President while transiting from Niue.

In a recent interview, Rabuka explained that he only communicated the relevant facts, and ultimately, it was the President’s decision to step back from being nominated for a second term as President. He noted the potential embarrassment that could arise from having a prominent leader subjected to a criminal investigation while in office.

Rabuka emphasized that it was not within his responsibilities to refer cases to FICAC, highlighting his limited role in ongoing corruption inquiries. Currently, there is some ambiguity surrounding any other investigations that may be underway after FICAC previously cleared the outgoing President, who had been under scrutiny from the Financial Intelligence Unit.

This situation underscores the complexities involved in the intersection of political leadership and legal accountability, revealing the challenges faced by national figures in maintaining integrity while navigating potential legal issues. It raises broader implications about governance and the mechanisms in place to address corruption.

As the investigation proceeds, it is hoped that transparency and accountability will prevail, reinforcing public trust in Fiji’s institutions. This matter ultimately reflects a critical phase in Fijian politics that may serve as a turning point for ethical governance moving forward.
