Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Independent Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj to reach out to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) concerning the difficulties he faces in his appeal against the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. This call follows Maharaj’s criticisms regarding the COC’s slow progress in appointing a new Chairperson for the Electoral Commission, a vacancy that has remained since the resignation of Barbara Malimali last September.

In a discussion with FijiLive, Rabuka highlighted that the COC includes representatives from the Opposition, notably Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu, to whom Maharaj can express his concerns. He clarified that the issues at hand involve both the COC’s responsibility to appoint a new chairperson and a separate process concerning Maharaj’s appeal, which is currently underway with the Fijian Elections Office.

Maharaj has labeled the COC’s inaction as “slack,” contending that they have been fully aware of the established appeal process but have not moved to fill the commissioner position. His appeal stems from a complaint by former FijiFirst member Mosese Bulitavu, who alleged that the party had violated its constitutional rules, particularly concerning leadership meetings.

The next hearing for this appeal is set for August 15, amplifying the urgency for all parties involved to address these matters effectively. The ongoing situation underlines the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, as well as the complexities of political regulation in Fiji.

As these discussions unfold, there is hope that enhanced communication among political entities will lead to constructive resolutions, ultimately bolstering public trust and confidence in Fiji’s democratic processes. Moving forward, it remains essential for all stakeholders to engage in open dialogue to ensure the electoral systems function smoothly and fairly.
